The Furies: A Laptopera

for laptop orchestra and live soloists

The Furies: A Laptopera (Act III, 2019) Performed by Stanford Laptop Orchestra with soloists Shauna Fallihee, Sidney Chen, and Alice Del Simone. Recorded live, June 8, 2019, in Bing Concert Hall, Stanford University.

The Furies: A Laptopera is a retelling of the Greek tragedy Electra which explores central questions regarding how people and communities escape from cycles of violence. The artistic medium of the laptop orchestra serves to recast the traditional instrumental role to support dramatic elements and character relationships while simultaneously positing critical questions about technology in our lives. Through composition that weaves together traditional music scoring with instrument building, movement, and narrative all guided by specific embodied metaphors, this opera strives to fulfill the vision of opera as a total art work. Acts I and III have been performed as works in progress, and Act II is in development.
